Senate Votes to Proceed With Yellen Nomination

Just before noon on Friday, the Senate voted to cut off debate and proceed with the nomination of Janet Yellen to Chair the Federal Reserve by a vote of 59-34.

It’s worth noting cloture would not have been invoked if the Senate were operating under existing Senate rules requiring 3/5ths of senators to vote in favor of ending debate on Executive nominations.

Instead, Harry Reid chose to ignore the Senate rules back on November 21, and since then, the Senate has been rubber stamping Executive nominees with a simple majority.

The Senate will vote on final confirmation of Yellen’s nomination when they return on January 6.
