Mondale was only a last-minute replacement. Before the accident, Coleman was trailing Wellstone by a HUGE margin. There was no way he would have ever defeated Wellstone had he survived. Even if Wellstone had been left brain-dead he would have won and done a better job than Coleman. If I recall, the union bosses hated him when he was Mayor, and I wouldn't be shocked if they (national unions) joined forces to take him down.
